The Objects That Made Me and Enhanced Me (Last One Was Bugged)
The Objects That Made and Enhanced Me:
By: Akeel Dixon
Prompt:
- What objects tell the story of your life?
Throughout my life, I have obtained a large number of objects. When I was really young, my favorite miniature toy was the space shuttle Endeavour, and my favorite book was The Snowy Day. In my elementary school years, I received Pokemon Cards/Beyblades and my preferred video game consoles: the Nintendo Switch and Wii. As I am now in my late teens, my prized objects are my Computer, Nintendo Switch 2 (how time flies), and the many books that I have acquired over the years, including books suited for my current age. I feel as though all these objects shaped who I am today as a person, a more “nerdy” person who wants to be a future astrophysicist.
The toy of the Endeavour Space Shuttle that I received when I was around the age of three or four was bought by my parents at a field trip I went on at the California Science Center. I assume they bought the toy because it would increase the love I had for the space sciences. I had been intrigued by the idea of space on the field trip. Around this time, I had a book called “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats. The premise of the book was a black boy named Peter who spends his time outside in the snow doing winter-related activities. This book influenced my choice of red as my favorite color, as I looked at the way Peter was dressed and saw myself represented in him. I also think this is where my love for winter and snow comes from, hence why winter is my favorite season.
In my elementary school, what was popular (with the boys mostly) were beyblades and Pokemon cards. I was personally more interested in the latter. However, Pokemon cards are part of the reason I love Pokemon today because I collected the card for Shinx as a kid. This also ties into my video game consoles. My first console was the Nintendo Wii, which my dad had gotten before I was born. It shaped me to end up loving video games, especially ones made by Nintendo, such as Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy, and Splatoon. This is because, like music or books, video games also evolve and enter new generations. The Wii would eventually lead me to get my first Switch, which I used to first play Splatoon 2 and a few Pokemon games, which are now two of my favorite video game series. Looking back on this now, I find my entry into the video game world to be bittersweet. It is hard for me to express my love for them without the stereotypical idea of gamers being “stupid” or prioritizing gaming over jobs/education.
For where I am today, part of it continues from my gamer arc, where I now have a Switch 2 (as I said, games evolve). However, through connecting with my current friends and a more recent object, my computer, I have been able to play more “indie” (independent) games such as Undertale/Deltarune. Those games are heavily based on morality and kindness, which have enhanced my becoming a better person today. My computer is important to me because on the internet you can discover and depict yourself in many different ways. My computer helped me learn about many perspectives that have shaped how I look at the world.
Moving forward, as the objects in my present mix with the personality made in my past, I believe I will become tied to my roots more. I believe this is an outcome I need, as some of the aspects of my personality before coming to Uni were better than where I am now. Ever since starting this essay, I have felt bit by bit that I am getting closer to discovering and becoming a mix of old and new self at the end of high school.
Feedback requests:
- Conclusion and how to improve it
- Anything I should cut?
- Anything I need to put more detail on or focus on?
- I've reached the 650 word limit however, I know that doesn't matter for the blog I just want to see how it plays out
